A court has upheld the decision by the government not to allow a petition against the upcoming cuts to the peace process to take place at Masjid As-Salaam, in Belfast, after the visiting imam, Saleem Raza, urged people to boycott police during Saturday’s protest. Mr Raza was warned last year that he could face criminal charges if he took part in the demonstrations, but he refused to leave the premises. He was later arrested and charged under the Public Order Act. A judge at the Magistrates' Court ruled that he could not be prosecuted, but that the Masjid As-Salaam and another protesters would be liable. A number of activists are now to lodge an appeal to the High Court, with permission needed from the Lord Chief Justice. During the protest in November, Mr Raza warned the congregation that the cuts could trigger an outbreak of "institutionalised corruption", while many members of the congregation were to boycott police. Allowed to proceed Lawyers for the government, which has already appealed against the original decision, are to move to allow the mosque protests to take place after Mr Raza on Saturday urged people to boycott the police. The Muslim Council of Britain is also expected to appeal after it was granted permission to take place at a number of different locations around Belfast. After the court ruling, the MCCB said it was to continue with its demonstration, adding that the "situation is not resolved". It was understood that the demonstration at the mosque was the first to be given approval to proceed. In November, a group of 60 Muslim women chained themselves together outside the Northern Ireland Assembly in Belfast during a protest against the peace process. Mr Raza said: "We will not accept the imposition of austerity as a condition for peace. "Instead we will organise boycotts, sanctions and non-cooperation to resist these measures. "In the name of Islam we will show solidarity with the Palestinian people and fight for justice in Gaza. "We will continue to challenge British state policy and lay siege to the mosque if we are not allowed access. "Only through
